EP Review: I Want That Back

A long time in the pipe works is Model Train Wreck’s new EP I Want That Back. Starting with an odd chord progression and the discord provides an uplifting vibe while still causing a chill to run down the spine. The riff is rather perturbing. The opening title track, I Want That Back, is repetitive vocally, but aptly named. As pop-rock as you can get, with more prominent vocal harmonies, Model Train Wreck could easily be a modern Beach Boys.

There is some musical variety in the EP, with the likes of Ghost Girlfriend being a subtler, reserved track, with a basic drum beat with keys. There are some really nice melodic vocal harmonies, and with the simple, clean lyrics, there is a child-like element to it; the songs have that positive, upbeat, natural rhythm that would get people dancing.

As the release progresses there is the feeling of energy being lost, as the pace slows, and the vocal style becomes more unhurried and relaxed. Something that could easily be altered with a mix in the track listing. The EP closes off with Space Base. Arguably, the slowest tracks on the release, it is an interesting choice to end the EP. Dawdling in pace, almost Lounge in style, with some nice saxophone parts. 

The release is well balanced, with a good pace, groovy vocals, snug harmonies, and enough layers and variety in the instrumentation to keep the tracks stimulating.
