EP Review: i

Indie is an interesting genre of music. I think of it like a seeing an experimental piece of art. Open to the experience, you see it, hear it and try to interpret what your senses are telling you. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes bad, sometimes it blows your mind, and sometimes it can leave you a bit confused, but it’s all part of the experience.

No Sky is a three -piece Auckland band, blending their unique indie sound with a simplistic style.

Formed November 2016, this is their debut EP and on first listen, it’s simple with a no-frills style. The production quality and mixing is on point, and captures an easy listening chilled vibe.

Vocally, it’s too bland for my taste. A little too monotonous with no depth. Vocalist, Joel Thomas has a brooding, deep voice, which is fantastic, but I feel it could be so much more. Maybe they are still trying to find their signature sound or style, and I applaud them for their efforts, however, I feel No Sky lacks a lot musically because of this on all four tracks.

Opinions are of course subjective, and it’s rare to come across something you want to like and it doesn’t work out. Perhaps in another few years, when they have established themselves a bit more, then their true sound will emerge.
