EP Review: Living In The Shadows

Born in Manila and residing in Auckland, Mia Caintic AKA Ms. Mia has just released her 5-track debut EP Living In The Shadows. Made with the support of the Asian Artists Fund – Foundation North/Creative NZ and NZ On Air, this EP has a full and polished sound, thanks to an impressive array of musicians and collaborators which complement the soulful sultry vocals of Ms. Mia.

Living In The Shadows is a meaningful journey through different parts of the artists life. A personal perspective on her life contributes to powerful lyrics.

The first track Shadows is captivating with a warm mellow tone and “cabaret-style” vibe. It’s a song about moving away from living a life according to what society dictates which immediately showcases Ms. Mia’s captivating vocals and the vulnerability of her songwriting. From the onset her alluring vocals capture your attention.

Butterflies is an emotive song full of meaning about the apprehension of settling for someone, the instrumentals perfectly conveying the mood of this track.

The second single to be released from the EP is Going For The Kill, and it’s accompanied by a music video. This track has an interesting arrangement and passionate delivery.

My standout track is This Game, described as “cinematic pop”, the moodiness is enhanced by piano, and eerily stunning violin. Poignant lyrics lament the loss of authentic relationships and genuine connections.

The last song on Living In The Shadows is Not Cryin. It shows the vulnerability of the artist through a moving yet hopeful track, gracefully rounding up the EP.

Ms. Mia and supporting artists have created a beautifully crafted strong body of work. Engaging and meaningful with a refined sound.
