Single Review: Back To The Beginning 1

Looking back to move forward.

Musicians have done this from the beginning.

Using influences, stealing riffs, it has all been done before. Looking back can be a good thing if there is enough creativity and originality of thought to build something better, something new or at the very least make it sound like it’s your own.

Dunedin based Fre3dom have a sound reminiscent of the Brit pop era that spawned bands in the UK like Oasis and has gone on more recently to influence bands like Australia’s DMA’s.

Luckily Fre3dom do have the originality to wear these influences on their sleeves without sounding like a poor imitation to be cast away. Their latest single, Back To The Beginning is an instant soaring sing along anthem.

Musically, it’s something we have all heard before but the song structure manages to avoid many of the usual cliches. What really stands out though are the vocals of Dan Hawkins. He has a voice that has enough of an edge to take things to another level. It’s not forced and doesn’t grate and on the chorus we really see the potential start to shine.

There is a lot to like in this track and a lot going on. The production is excellent and the energy flows right from the opening chords to the final fade. It will stick in your head long after it’s over and even at 6 mins + it manages not to outstay it’s welcome.

Fre3dom deserve your attention and Back To The Beginning is a great place to start.
