Single Review: Empty Space

With a snappy snare, a thick, distorted chug, and an opening riff reminiscent of Pantera’s Cowboys from Hell, Pale Lady have finally released their debut single, Empty Space. Forming in 2016, and winning the Battle of the Bands in 2017, there is clear evidence that they have a good thing going. Empty Space is another piece of evidence towards the calibre of artists that they are. With a sound that is best described as AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses meets Silverchair and Foo Fighters, they combine clean vocals, with high pace heavy chords and piercing guitar solos.  

Pale Lady has a mature sound, and vocalist Conall D Ryan doesn’t flinch from using the full range of his voice, hitting the high notes and creating well-timed rising harmonies with backing vocalist Sam Higham. With a breakdown that hints of Setting Fire to Stacey’s No Way Out, they have that classic rock and classic kiwi sound.

Lyrically, the choruses are very basic, but this does lend to it being a good “live” song, as it makes it that much easier for the crowd to sing along with. While a solid inoffensive track, it lacks a proper hook to make it memorable. A valiant first effort nonetheless.
