Single Review: Home

Home is the new single from professional rugby player turned pop star Sam Heselwood – an up and coming Otautahi star who has already hit the charts and is clearly ‘one to watch’.

An authentically vulnerable song, Home is both sweet and strong, and thoughtfully produced – recorded by Terence O’Connor and mixed by Simon Gooding. 

Sam’s soaring vocals are the strength of this beautiful melody which is given plenty of space to breathe; not in a hurry to go anywhere musically yet always moving.

Influenced by the likes of Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi, Sam Heselwood’s music is warm and intimate, and something in the tone of his voice reminds me of fellow Kiwi TEEKS.

Sam uses his partner as muse and inspiration in the lyric, saying “I enjoy writing about personal, relatable things in my life and think Home hits the nail on the head with that.” Made with the support of NZ on Air and co-written with NZ singer-songwriter Sally Faherty, Home begins with the refreshingly honest lyric

“Life is good right now, but it doesn’t mean it always was”.

Seems to me, Sam is living life the way it’s meant to be – and I look forward to hearing what he does next!
