Need is the latest single from Taranaki punk rockers Broke.
It leaps straight out of the gate with snarling, anthemic punk attitude, a rolling and rollicking beat with guitars up to eleven. A powerful delivery from vocalist Aidan Rogers recalls a tale of a relationship rent asunder, only to be rebuilt after some time with the benefit of hindsight and perspective, a tale of letting go of contention and division in order to focus on what is truly important, finally bringing peace.
A well-structured song that doesn’t let up in the energy stakes, and has a strong sense of melody with a superbly complimentary and danceable rhythm. There are some fantastic vocal harmonies, suitably angry yet warmly delicious guitar tones, poundingly fat bass, and monstrous drums- all the elements for a good time. Broke have done a commendable job of capturing and producing this track themselves.
I’m strongly reminded of The Living End, which in my book is an excellent thing, I still thrash the daylights out of their early stuff. I hear a strong presence of that same type of high-intensity rockabilly style, so that gets me ready to put on my dancing shoes and crank it up loud.
Give this a nudge next time you Need a good high-volume blowout, it’s a hell of a good time. Nice work

Passionate music lover from the south, based in Otautahi Christchurch. Writes, sings, and plays guitar in Finger Of Contempt, and The Tubetones. Plays bass in Mudbelly. I spend most of my days tutoring music, which equates to getting to talk about music and play guitar, and then people give me money. It’s an absolute blast. In my spare time, I am mildly obsessed with plants and gardening. I love spending time with my kids. I love board games, and flying kites, and riding bikes, and food. I really like good coffee, a lot. I’m rarely satisfied with my guitar pedalboard. I have a cat called Liberty.
