Video Review: Slave to the Grind

A rather unorthodox request, having already reviewed the EP, but we were asked to review Cheshire Grimm’s lyric video for their Slave to the Grind track from their EP Rain or Shine. The video was created by Jesse Wheeler from Cloudfall Media.

At the start of the video, they appear to use a mixture of lit control panels, night-time traffic footage, among other images, digitally unfocused, flipped and reversed to create a visually exciting kaleidoscope of colours. There are clearly distinctive images used for the different song sections, whether the verse, pre-chorus, or chorus, and the imagery used matches the speed of the track, with slower movements in the pre-chorus, and faster footage in the chorus.

The video uses a fun font that is very easy to read, and variable in appearance to prevent it from becoming monotonous. As it is a lyric video and not a karaoke video (some videos will provide the words earlier so you viewer can sing along with the music), the words appear as they are sung in the track and the timing is very well done, with larger centralised font during the choruses. I love the little details such as having the lyrics “let it fall” literally falling across the other lyrics on screen. My only gripe is the unfortunate spelling error in the first line of the track, where “stomarch” is used instead of “stomach”.

The colours and pacing of the video matches the energy and funk of the track. This is how a lyric video should be made.
