Imugi 이무기 Drop Triple Hit Combo ‘It’s Ok To Be A Lil Alien’

Tāmaki’s buzziest electronic duo Imugi 이무기 drop retrospective 3-track EP featuring a PollyHill collab and a spaced-out, flipped cover of @peace’s Where I Come From.

Shortly after the release of their dance remix album Dragonfruit:Remixed EP, Imugi strike again with their next EP, It’s OK To Be A Lil Alien.

Presenting three songs which affirm that, it is, in fact, “OK to be a lil alien in this big universe of unknowns and enmeshed structures in which, if you focus real hard you may be able to see through the cracks towards a utopia where your existence is loved,” says vocalist Yery Cho.

Soaked in Carl Ruwhiu’s atmospheric production with resonant outer-planetary synths and rhythms, Imugi do what they do best amid electromagnetic beats and melodic tunes with an RnB tinge.

The EP travels between the soft and the gritty with focus track TTYL bouncing in like a gust of fresh air, fearlessly declaring independence, urging connection over disconnected egos.

Meanwhile, Bittersweet featuring PollyHill – their distinct charisma and sharp, witty rhymes peeling back a vulnerable and honest introspection in love, loss and habitual decay.

The duo also pay homage to @peace’s original track Where I Come From through an augmented cover. Initially penned by Aotearoa’s iconic Harry Tuisau (Haz’Beats), Lui Tuiasau and Tom Scott, Imugi revisit the song with new and old eyes.

Shapeshifting with the original, Cho delivers some flipped verses, reminiscing the idea of home and questioning our place in the wider structures of the world. With a tender shout out to Jong Hyun Kim they tap into the epidemic of silent suffering and masking in an unforgiving landscape, hoping for better days.
