Sofia Machray Releases New Single
Sofia Machray wraps up summer with her newest single release Milky Ways. The dreamy track written by Sofia crescendos into a powerful tornado of a song serving up bittersweet feelings on a plate with a hint of indie-pop. Recorded in Wellington, New Zealand, with producer Robbie Pattinson and mix engineer Lee Prebble (Dave Dobbyn, The Black Seeds, Trinity Roots), the track indulges itself in walls of shimmery summer sounds and is out on all streaming platforms today. Hailing from the heart of the mountains in Arrowtown, Sofia started delving into the realm of indie music from an early age. She has spent the last 3 years staking her claim in Wellington alongside her support band.
Milky Ways harnesses infectious vocal tones and electric guitar-driven instrumentation perfumed with a sentimental indie surf scent. The song toys on the idea of toxicity within society and people, a topic the vast majority of us can relate to. With new change comes new experiences, some good and some bad. For Sofia Machray Milky Ways was a byproduct of being surrounded by toxic behavior she explains; “being surrounded by this kind of behavior can be exhausting, I let it manifest for a long time, being a passive person I often dealt with my feelings of anger by turning it into art.”
A self-help song fueled by Machray’s frustration and dreamlike melodies, Milky Ways reminds us to embrace our inner feelings and not to be afraid to express them. It’s a song to sit with but also one to move to. Sofia says; “In all honesty, I was quite pissed off at the time, I just wanted to get my feelings all out on paper, leave it there and do a little dance. I hope people can feel inspired by Milky Ways to do that same!”
After topping alternative charts in 2020 with her debut single Handstands in 2020, Sofia Machray is fast at solidifying herself as a tactful, femme-led outfit in the forefront of New Zealand’s alternative indie scene and beyond.
