Hoihoi Announce North Island Tour

Ōtautahi/Christchurch live scene mainstays Hoihoi are bringing their signature reo Māori/English post-punk to Whanganui, Te Papaioea/Palmerston North and Pōneke/Wellington for three dates in June.
Tour ki Te Ika-a-Māui kicks off on Thursday 12th June at Porridge Watson (Whanganui) with support from Pining Radiata and The Fairlight Choir. These bands will then join Hoihoi on the road to Te Papaioea for a show alongside Beef at The Stomach on Friday June 13th.
“Ka nui te hīkaka! We’re stoked to join these Manawatū bands for two back-to-back gigs,” said Kupu – co-vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of Hoihoi.
Hoihoi are joined on Saturday 14th June in Pōneke by local noise makers Adult Friends and Christchurch band Swipers at Underworld Tavern.
Hoihoi means to be quiet or loud “depending on the context!” says second guitarist, vocalist and writer Ryan Nicol. “We do a high-energy live show, that’s for sure,” Nicol says, “but we always give some room for the melodies and quiet spaces between the noise.”
The band’s debut EP, Tahitahi, was released on 7” vinyl by local record label Leather Jacket Records, and was well received with music.nz saying it “has all the screeching noise, grinding bass and ensemble yelling you’d hope for […] It’s intense and fulfilling.”
Between Christchurch gigs the band has been in the studio and is close to releasing a second EP, including a cover and re-interpretation of Pin Group’s Jim. “We’re really pleased that Pin Group gave us permission to record and publish Jim, a real treasure from the early Flying Nun catalog” says Nicol. Pin Group was an early Christchurch band signed to Flying Nun. The new EP is being mastered now with a full album of new songs in the works.
“On this tour we’re delighted to be bringing our best songs and guitar feedback to a new audience in Te Ika-a-Māui,” says Kupu.
