Local indie-rockers No Cigar have revealed a moodier side to their sonic palette with the release of new single Clean.

The arrival of Clean also comes with news that No Cigar will release their third album Under The Surface on Wednesday July 30, and to celebrate, they’re hitting the road for a three-date tour.

Clean is the last taster of what’s to come on the new album, Under The Surface. The song reflects No Cigar in its purest form – relaxed, cruisy and chill, but also energetic, catchy and gritty. The rhythmic lead vocal bounces effortlessly through verses, before delicate harmonies and ethereal backing vocals open up the resounding choruses.

In keeping with the band’s MO for turning out infectious earworms that come packaged in thought-provoking lyricism, Clean delves into the allure of hedonism and the power of self control. “We tread the line between what’s right and wrong, what we want and what we need. We’re always being pushed and pulled here and there,” says No Cigar’s Arthur Gillies.

Clean provides the perfect segue to the release of Under The Surface on Wednesday July 30, which also includes the already released tracks Best Behaviour, Problem and Chantilly.

Fans of the band will be excited to see clips from their recent European tour featured in the music video for Clean where handycam/VHS style footage helps to portray the feeling of nostalgia and capture the rawness, emotion and energy of being at a No Cigar concert.

The video – was made by London-based videographer and editor Matt Wellham, with tour footage supplied by videographer Tim Cotton.

For those New Zealand fans who have been patiently waiting for the band to return home after taking the world by storm and selling out shows across Europe, their chance to catch them live comes later this year with an album release tour, presented by Eccles Entertainment.

The tour follows on from six Australia live dates (October 23 – November 1). It kicks off in Aotearoa in Wellington at Meow Nui on Friday, November 7, before heading south to Christchurch at Ngaio Marsh Theatre on Saturday, November 8 and wrapping up in Auckland at the Powerstation on Friday, November 14.
