One of Aotearoa’s most exciting indie intellects, Mim Jensen, returns today with a new single and lyric video Big Feelings – her most sharp-witted and emotionally charged music to date.

Listen Here

There’s a rare kind of honesty in all of Mim’s work – lyrics that feel like diary entries and a raw story telling in her delivery. In this song, her voice has a distinct haunting flair, led beside a vibrant acoustic guitar. The lyrics “All these feelings that I have forgotten – I want them, I want them” are prominent throughout the hook and carried by a rich and colourful melody, all creating this tapestry of feeling.

The lyric video plays like a recovered camcorder memory, shot in a lofi, handheld style that feels like a visual extension of Mim’s songwriting. Lyrics like “my heart’s made a home for you” display on screen as Mim and her friends dance, chat, and laugh through the evening, capturing small moments and Big Feelings.

On the birth of the track, Mim says “Big Feelings lived through a few different demo stages until it became the song it is now. At its core, the song is about chasing external experiences to feel alive and romanticising the better moments of a tumultuous relationship and an unhealthy push-pull dynamic”

“What I learnt from writing the song was that sometimes a memory feels happier than what actually happened in real life. When sitting with what the song means to me now, I see how I was often searching outwardly all the time to gain inspiration. To me, Big Feelings is a reminder that it’s just as important to be bored and still and seek inspiration that way.” – Mim Jensen

Big Feelings follows Mim’s September single Sidekick which was featured as Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘Songs You Need To Know’ and Best New Zealand Music Of The Week. The song marked the start of a new era for Mim with her familiar gritty indie rock at the core, but with attention to her raw and vulnerable songwriting. Big Feelings has taken this another step further as she explores losing yourself in relationships and chasing fleeting moments of happiness.
