The New Zealand singer and songwriter who gave us one of the biggest locally made songs of the last decade has today revealed an exciting new chapter in her remarkable journey.
We present to you: Robinson and The Romantics!
Nelson-born Anna Robinson went global when she released her debut single Nothing To Regret in 2018. It topped charts and took the streaming world by storm – racking up more than 130 million streams on Spotify alone. A swag of successful singles and EPs followed leading to today’s big reveal – Robinson and The Romantics’ single Guaranteed.
“This moment is so important because it signifies the evolution of my story and evolving to this place where I feel so internally free,” says Robinson. “I feel like I’ve had the most beautiful but intense inner journey of really learning to trust myself, my path and surrender to the unknown, which can be so hard to do.”
Now based in the UK, the double platinum artist explains that Robinson and The Romantics is a natural evolution. “It’s the same me, same voice, same songs, same Robinson”. The only difference is the music now has a world to which it belongs. “It allows people listening to really get to know me better. ‘The Romantics’ are dreamers – they’re not afraid to go within and follow their heart, they’re sensitive, deep feelers and passionate.” It’s who Robinson has always been.
And new song Guaranteed is the perfect start to the new story that’s unfolding. The song’s light, free, hopeful and upbeat vibe is contrasted against darker lyrics, which detail how intense the push and pull of life can be. “It’s what exists so much throughout life – the need for control and then the lightness that is waiting on the other side.”
Speaking candidly, Robinson says she wrote Guaranteed at a time when she felt terrified at the prospect that all her childhood dreams would never come true. “The weight felt so heavy. I remember thinking ‘What if this is it’. And of course, just the way music does, I heard Charles [Macdonald] strumming these chords on the guitar. They sounded exactly how I felt. I sat on the floor got the mic and within 20 minutes the whole song was finished.”
Guaranteed opened up a door through which hope and joy came flooding back, paving the way for the momentous milestone of unveiling Robinson and The Romantics.
“This moment could’ve only come now,” she says. “In my earlier years, I had so much to work through. I was constantly in this battle of thinking I was meant to be ‘there’ and never being present in my current reality. I felt intense stress trying to keep up with everything – my nervous system really suffered. But I know I had to live through and experience it fully, because it’s allowed me to shed so many of those limiting beliefs and really trust that I am exactly where I’m meant to be.”
Now the talented songwriter is ready to take on the world once again. “The creativity is burning bright. I love life, and I feel so much hope and I think that’s coming through in what I’m creating now.”
And she has a message for day one fans, who have been such an integral part of the journey. “You truly understand it from beginning to now. This is still the same me that wrote Nothing To Regret and Medicine but it’s a me that I hope you will feel has evolved and healed.”
