Pōneke based trip-hop/alt-rock trio Tragedies has announced the release of their second single Taupiri hot on the heels of their debut Ordinary reaching number 1 on the Radioactive.fm Top 11, due for release on July 15th exclusively on Bandcamp. Coming from the reo Maori word for ‘a loving embrace’, Taupiri is a queer love song for the end of the world that celebrates the small moments of bliss and sanctuary carved out of dark times.

The track tells the story of a relationship that didn’t just survive a gender transition, but grew stronger because of it. A driving rhythm section lays the foundation for a delicate dance of intricate harmonies that walk their own wayward paths but always return to the centre together in an enduring cycle of love and resilience. A song of tragedy and sanctuary, Taupiri embodies a hopeful reading of the immortal words from Oscar Wilde’s play ‘Salomé’: “The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death”.

Tragedies will perform Taupiri live at their single release show at Valhalla, Wellington on July 15th joined by screaming grunge-folk icon Diplopoda and dynamic alt-rock five-piece Hit Me.
