Ōtautahi rockers Pieces Of Molly take fans on a wild ride of pure unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll on their new single Alligator.

Clocking in at a furious three-and-a-half-minutes, Alligator is a primal and aggressive rock track, amplified with loud guitars, vicious vocals and chaotic energy.

“The song is built around tension, aggression, manipulation and the feeling of it pulling you back in. It’s garage rock filth, inspired by classic hard rock attitude but pushed into darker territory. We wanted it to feel wild and unpredictable while still having that big energy,” says the band, which is made up of Ewen Glasgow (vocals/guitar), Doug Stewart (bass), Sam Kubiak (guitar), and Kurt Fleming (drums).

Alligator was recorded at the LAB in Auckland with the award-winning Olly Harmer (The Naked and Famous); mixed by Chris ‘Frenchie’ Smith (Meat Puppets, Jet, Trail Of Dead) at The Bubble studios in Austin, Texas and mastered by Chris Chetland at KOG Studios in Auckland.

“The LAB is a killer studio with some amazing gear. We are pretty old school in our approach and influences and the LAB is the perfect setting for a band like us.

“Chris [Smith] is a kindred spirit, a real rock ‘n’ roll disciple – he knew exactly where we were coming from and more importantly he loved the song, so he really poured his heart and soul into it. He has worked with some incredible artists and was himself in a band back in the day – Young Heart Attack.

“Meanwhile Chris [Chetland] is a real heavyweight in the NZ music industry when it comes to mastering. He turned our song sonically up to 11.”

To capture the palpable energy of Alligator, Pieces of Molly enlisted legend Adam Hogan for the music video. Shot mostly at the old pumphouse in Christchurch, it gives fans a glimpse of the live Pieces of Molly experience and features punters who turn into reptilians in disguise.

“The song is about manipulation so we really took it up a notch to represent that visually.”
