Chillaxin’ With Cherry marks the return of Sydney-based duo Sunset Tsunami, arriving as the first single from their forthcoming second album.
While their debut album, Dub Till Dawn was built on a foundation of electronic dub, this new project signals a noticeable shift in direction. Drawing on neo-soul influence, downtempo production and classic funk sensibility, while still retaining the duo’s deep-groove foundations.
Built around a simple sample, a bassline and the spirit of late-night soul records, Chillaxin’ With Cherry captures the feeling of being suspended in a moment while watching the world move around you – staring out at the ocean, driving late at night, or reflecting on how quickly life seems to pass. It feels nostalgic without being sad, and quietly hopeful without forcing the feeling.
The single sets the tone for a new chapter in Sunset Tsunami’s evolving sonic world, with a nod to the golden era of Grand Central Recordings, Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) and the Mushroom Jazz sound.
