Hine Announces New EP ‘Ka Mua Ka Muri’ + Releases New Single and Video

HINE is the maiden project by GiGi Crayford. Mokopuna of the Crayford Jazz whānau & blood line of artists. Her upcoming project is a 5-track EP titled Ka Mua Ka Muri. Expressing her experience of leaving the city of Wellington she grew up in & moving onto ancestral land in Ōtaki. There she spent 3 years pulling the threads of her whakapapa learning Te Reo Māori in full immersion course. This project is the fruit of bravely digging into her roots & tracing lineage.
Today HINE releases her newest single and accompanying music video for Over The Bones.
Aided by her journey of learning to carve & play Taonga Pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) as a healing modality, Gigi wrote these songs in both Te Reo Māori & English on autoharp, piano, guitar & taonga pūoro. Each song an ode to a different Atua Wahine. Recorded on her Ngāti Raukawa land & backed instrumentally by her whānau, this initiative has whakapapa in every step of its production.
“Ka rongo koe ki te waiata o te kōōiwi? Can you hear the song of the bone?” – Lyrics from the EP
Echoing the emotionally drenched lyricism of Joni Mitchell, enigmatic voice akin to Kate Bush & soaring ecstatic moments like Pink Floyd. Interwoven with Taonga Pūoro; creating a contemporary genre-bending experience. HINE reverberates with authentic expression, wahine power & the vital place music has in healing & self discovery.
Following her successful release & sold out show at Māoriland of her debut single in 2024, HINE received funding support from Creative NZ in order to release & promote the remaining songs on the Ka Mua Ka Muri EP.
Ka Mua Ka Muri will be available on all major streaming platforms from Saturday 25 July.
“My dad was the first in our whānau to start re-claiming his reo back in the 80’s after the generations before him who it was lost to. I remember him speaking to me in Māori before bed, singing waiata – it was always music. But I didn’t have much of my own reo and it was something I was ashamed about. Learning Te Reo Māori and this project has allowed me to access deeper parts of myself, my connection & embodiment of whakapapa, Māoritanga. To remember what it truly means to be human.. this process has touched every part of my being” – Gigi Crayford
HINE & full whānau band will be touring Aotearoa in July & August 2026 promoting the EP.
