Cindy Release Debut Album ‘The Way I Do’
Cindy are the garage rock group of consisting of Scott Brown, James King, Gloria Florence and Arlo Grey, based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland).
For nearly a decade Cindy has been toiling in independent venues, leading Rolling Stone AUS/NZ to describe them as “the type of unpretentious, if-you-know-you-fucking-know, resolutely DIY band that rewards discovery.”
Cindy has supported international talent like OFF!, Mean Jeans and Japanese touring acts Guitar Wolf, Shonen Knife, King Brothers, ALKASILKA and Watusi Zombie. Where possible they’ve reciprocated the cultural exchange, traveling to tour Japan in 2018 and 2023. Cindy’s 2018 eponymous debut EP and two follow up singles (2020’s Big Energy and 2023’s B21) have amassed tens of thousands of streams and are a firm favourite on Aotearoa’s alternative radio stations. In 2025 Cindy teamed up with Sunreturn to release Big Summer Blowout and would go on to perform at Newtown Festival and support Aussie legends Regurgitator.
Today Cindy release that their long awaited debut album The Way I Do digitally and on vinyl LP in collaboration between 1:12 Records and Sunreturn. Aotearoa Rock royalty Andrew Tolley puts it best when he describes The Way I Do as “some kinda sugar sweet fuzzed manic popped rok monsta flipping between speeds, light & shade, lullabies & nightmares. It’s a sonic audio trip, a curiosity & a mystery of both magic & madness, a trip that once you start, you ain’t gonna be able to stop.”

The Way I Do presents Cindy at their finest. Refined, whetted and locked in, these four journeymen have distilled nearly a decade’s worth of live sets into 11 tracks of uniquely New Zealand garage punk and alternative rock. Long time darlings of Aotearoa’s alternative radio stations Cindy have the band have garnered acclaim from Sunday Magazine, Undertheradar.co.nz, 13th Floor, Muzic.NZ and the charts (Aotearoa Hot Singles Chart, Radioscope Alt chart, 95bFM Top 10 & SRN Top 10).
“We have all learnt a lot from making The Way I Do, namely how much fucking work goes into an album,” jokes singer and songwriter Scott Brown. “I guess the record is a culmination of our time performing for people, it’s a way to show our progress as a band. Instead of pressuring ourselves to put out something perfect we decided to have fun with it. We don’t want to be too precious. It’s not like we think it’s the be all and end all of music in Aotearoa. We just have fun playing together and playing gigs.”
“We feel like we have put a lot of ourselves into this album and we can’t wait to get started on the next one. Most of all we are excited to tour this album around and party with people. People need a good gig to let off steam and we hope we can put on gigs for people to let loose.”
The Way I Do was recorded direct to tape by Darren McShane at Earwig Studios (with drums performed by Jordan Lim) before being mixed & mastered by Steven Marr. The Way I Do is out on September 4th digitally and on vinyl LP in collaboration between 1:12 Records and Sunreturn.
