Cindy are a garage rock group of consisting of Scott Brown, James King, Gloria Florence and Arlo Grey, based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). For nearly a decade Cindy has been toiling in independent venues, leading Rolling Stone AUS/NZ to describe them as “the type of unpretentious, if-you-know-you-fucking-know, resolutely DIY band that rewards discovery.”

Ahead of next week’s release of their long awaited debut album & NZ tour Cindy share their final single A Knife. Sitting as the album closer, A Knife sees the band flex their slow burn song writing skills.

Inspired by The Cranberries, Deftones and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Cindy’s new single A Knife seethes & smoulders throughout its five minute runtime. James King’s guitar tone menacingly wobbles while Gloria Florence’s vocal appears like an apparition before the track transforms into a hauntingly riotous din. A Knife was recorded direct to tape by Darren McShane at Earwig Studios (with drums performed by Jordan Lim) before being mixed & mastered by Steven Marr.

“It feels like everyone is going through a lot right now and I think this song reflects the sense of instability we’re all experiencing,” explains Gloria. “We wanted to show a more emotional and vulnerable side, we love making noise and making a scene, we are always up for being the high energy band, but we also have fun exploring other sides of our musical abilities. We played with dynamics in this song and explored an edgier side to the band’s sound. It’s a nice cathartic end to our high energy album.”

A Knife is definitely one of the more simple songs sonically but complex lyrically. Using lots of imagery to communicate a sense of sorrow and mournfulness. We are always excited to play this song live and we hope that it has just as big an impact when people listen to the track on vinyl.”

Cindy’s new album The Way I Do will be released on September 4th digitally and on vinyl LP in collaboration between 1:12 Records and Sunreturn.

Having just blasted Raglan while supporting the Hard-Ons, Cindy announces that this September and October they will jump into the Daihatsu Hijet Cargo and hit the road throughout Aotearoa in celebration of their debut album, The Way I Do. Scott Brown promises these shows will be “High energy and hopefully people on the roof. It’s my favorite thing to see live when we have a dozen people from the crowd on top of their peers. Cindy try for each show to be better than the last energetically and musically.” If Cindy’s in your town don’t wait, grab yourself a ticket before they’re gone.
