Trauma Party Confront Political Spectacle with ‘Roll Up (It’s the New Truth)’
Roll Up (It’s the New Truth) is the scorching new video single from Waiheke Island garage / post-punk group Trauma Party. It completes a series of four videos drawn from the New Zealand band’s debut EP, Because You’ve Been Good. The EP’s heaviest track builds tension through rolling drums and dark, scalding guitar, protesting the current political order and warning of right-wing rhetoric increasingly echoed by political factions in New Zealand and around the world. The warning arrives with a note of grim theatricality: “…the circus is coming to town!”
The new video premiered on New York’s Post-punk.com last week (Tuesday, 1 September 2026), where Alice Teeple writes that the song:
“…barrels forward on rolling drums and blackened guitar, turning political disgust into a carnival bark that grows more feverish with every repetition… There is some of The Fall’s sour wit in the delivery, some Killing Joke in the pressure underneath… Trauma Party throws these ingredients into a garage-rock furnace and lets the song stagger around like a circus tent caught in a riot… There is a Mad Max quality to the imagery, crossed with the scruffy end-times fatalism of A Boy and His Dog, yet the cheap-thrills destruction carries political purpose… Trauma Party closes their EP Because You’ve Been Good by making the circus grotesque, psychedelic, and dangerously catchy.”
The track brings the EP’s exploration of personal and political turmoil to a close, while pointing towards a heavier direction for the band. That sound carries through into their forthcoming album and has already been road-tested on stages around Aotearoa (New Zealand). The band describe the song as both a warning against political disinformation and a call to resistance:
“This song is not quiet; it screams at us all to wake up and beware ‘the new truth’ and the surreality of alternative facts. It’s a fiery post-punk alert from the fringes, illustrating the strength of art and music as tools of resistance.”
The song demands a video to match its fiery intensity, and Trauma Party deliver. Filmed on a cold, moonlit night outside The Woolshed, the band’s local clubhouse at the Waiheke Dirt Track, the performance captures their anger and frustration amid fire, smoke and Molotov cocktails. Cars pass in the background as ordinary life continues uninterrupted, lending the scene an uneasy sense of public paralysis.
The lyrics invoke a fat orange clown, at once pathetic and dangerous, alongside Orwellian doublespeak and the power of collective resistance. Vocalist Buddy Olson distils the song’s political message into a call for solidarity and accountability: “The privileged are few. We have them surrounded. Don’t let them escape. Hold them accountable.”
