Calla of Ursa Releases New Single ‘Purple Haze’

Calla of Ursa is a force of nature wielding unique musical skill as a spiritual spellcaster to capture audiences in a suspended time-rift. An operatically trained soprano, violinist and electronic musician, Calla of Ursa is one of those people for whom music is not a pond lightly dabbled in, but an ocean that she calls home. It’s not so much that she plays music; it simply pours out of her. Expect elements of operatic vocals, heavy bass, and homages to the worlds of folk, pop, and cinema epics. If music is the language of the soul then Calla of Ursa speaks truth in many tongues.
Calla of Ursa ignited a 5-show national tour in 2025 and a 17‑show national tour in 2023, opened Twisted Frequency 2024, and twice illuminated the LUMA Light & Sound Festival (Emerging Artist ’23, Sound Artist ’24). She also was awarded the 2022 Dame Malvina Major South Island Arts Excellence Award and has recently completed a Master of Music at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.
Purple Haze comes out today, Friday 18th September, and is the first single of Calla of Ursa’s upcoming EP, Amadea, out early 2027.
Purple Haze explores queer love, desire, and the pull of falling in love expressed through a gentle ballad that builds into a dream-pop cinematic swell. Calla of Ursa draws on the subconscious by using dreams as an instrument to illuminate our inner-most desires. In signature Calla of Ursa’s style, the natural world becomes a mirror for the singer’s internal landscape. As the singer travels down Aotearoa’s coast line, she observes the shifting scenery of the ocean as a mechanism to describe the emotional tides of new love; just as the moon pulls at the ocean, this new love pulls at her heart. Purple Haze provides the first glimpse into Calla of Ursa’s next chapter of music that is bold, intimate, and upholds a deep reverence for the natural world.
