Calla of Ursa is a force of nature wielding unique musical skill as a spiritual spellcaster to capture audiences in a suspended time-rift. An operatically trained soprano, violinist and electronic musician, Calla of Ursa is one of those people for whom music is not a pond lightly dabbled in, but an ocean that she calls home. It’s not so much that she plays music; it simply pours out of her. Expect elements of operatic vocals, heavy bass, and homages to the worlds of folk, pop, and cinema epics. If music is the language of the soul then Calla of Ursa speaks truth in many tongues.

Calla of Ursa ignited a 5-show national tour in 2025 and a 17‑show national tour in 2023, opened Twisted Frequency 2024, and twice illuminated the LUMA Light & Sound Festival (Emerging Artist ’23, Sound Artist ’24). She also was awarded the 2022 Dame Malvina Major South Island Arts Excellence Award and has recently completed a Master of Music at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

Face God comes out today, Friday 30th October, in celebration of the Celtic festival of Samhain, a time where the boundary between our world and the spirit world is thin. The track is a meditation on mortality and morality, the seeking of solace through the weightings of our actions and choices we make in life. This is the second single released in anticipation of Calla of Ursa’s upcoming EP, due 19th March 2027.

A song that began with a sip of cacao, the heart medicine, alone in her studio and exploring intuitive composition and flow state developed into a meditation on morality in a world of increasing global conflict. Face God offers a broader reflection on our relationship with our personal sense of integrity, offering the idea that at the end of life the totality of the choices we make is seen not only by ourselves but also by a greater spiritual force. ‘God’ in this instance is used to represent a life force that exists both within and beyond us as individuals. At a time where despondency and disassociation is commonplace and inaction can speak louder than action, Calla of Ursa invites a conversation with the sacred into a largely secular world, exploring the question of what happens when we die and how we weigh up the choices we have made in life.

Built around the simple repeating refrain, “Greet the Face of God Alone”, Face God pulls the listener into a meditative world of neo-classical piano, affected soprano vocals, strings, and looped percussion, inviting an intimate conversation with ourselves.

Face God parallels itself with Calla’s track Face Me from her previous album which explores the act of confronting our deepest truths. Where Face Me turns inward, Face God extends that confrontation towards something larger than ourselves.
