The song that gave the album its name, Diaspora Baby is a four-to-the-floor dance track with disco touches, built on a sampled African percussion loop and shimmering synths. Estère’s soulful vocal builds into stacked harmonies, carrying a story that traces her path from New Zealand to London and back to her ancestral Cameroon. As conversations about diaspora identity grow louder than ever, it is a song for this moment, and for anyone seeking belonging.
Estère says of the track:
“Diaspora Baby has been a mantra since I wrote it over three years ago. It travelled with me from NZ to London – and was the song I built the rest of my project around. As a song it’s been through a lot. I lost the original demo I created somewhere in the move to London and had to re-create it all painstakingly. I produced this one on my own, and in a way it chronicles my immigration and identity reclamation journey. I hope anyone who’s been through something similar can also hear their story in it.”
Diaspora Baby follows the singles Obsidian and Corduroy Jeans and is the clearest statement yet of the questions at the heart of the record: what it means to embrace her African-ness after growing up mixed race in New Zealand, and where home actually is, in a place or in herself.
Coming off the back of what’s already been a huge year in touring, including a slot at Boom Town, she supports Joy Anonymous on 24 October, plays 90Mil in Berlin on 18 November, and will appear at Bread & Butter Collective as part of her collective DiaxXpora, November 21st in London.
When she isn’t making music herself, she teaches music production to women in countries where political conditions limit their access to education.
Diaspora Baby is made with the kind support of NZ on Air.
