Album Review: Journey

American born Kiwi singer Jennifer K. Austin has recently released her second studio album Journey, following on from the release of the first three singles (Shadow, Misery and Old Gin), this beautiful ten track album is highly influenced by her life story.

Inspired by listening to her father’s country music as a child, Journey has a country influence, but it is not predominant. Infused with a mix of other genres, this album has its own unique flavour.

Jennifer has an appealing, melodic and clear voice, her career in the performing arts and as a music teacher has clearly influenced her sound, with 20 years of theatrical experience and 18 years of classic vocal training, producing polished vocals and warm, golden under tones.

Journey is a multifaceted compilation of emotion; broody piano gives way to bright guitar throughout the songs. What Jennifer is sharing is personal experiences which give the lyrics depth and intensity.

The opening track Scared of Letting Go is a gentle flowing song which is a combination of keys and beautiful melody.

Two of my personal favourites were The Strain, starting out with quiet guitar and synth, layering up with a bassy backdrop, adding in flamenco guitar for a surprising twist and dramatic flair. The other being Old Gin, an upbeat good old fashioned country song which gets you tapping your toes and singing along.

Journey was exactly that. A wonderful expedition around different genres, working seamlessly together. Jennifer’s personal experiences stitching it all together with heartfelt lyrics and graceful vocals.
