Single Review: What Comes Around

Young four piece breakthrough Kiwi Punk Rock band Sit Down In Front (SDIF) from Gisborne have just released their eagerly anticipated single What Comes Around. The lads who keep it “hard, fast and catchy”, writing about everyday stuff have delivered another gutsy punk number to warm the cockles of NZ punk rockers from one end of the country to the other.

Another success story to come from the Smokefreerockquest, SDIF has had an incredible ride thus far since they won the 2019 top spot. Opening for bands such as The Chats, Skinny Hobos, Jon Toogood and The D4, not to mention a successful tour with Jimmy Barnes (who loved them so much they have been invited back to as openers for Cold Chisel early 2020). These guys are still in school, yet they have already spent three weeks on the NZ Music Charts with their last single Rain.

That’s what harnessing the essence of a young Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) can do, that and an instant appeal that draws you in whether you are a fan of punk rock or not. The future of NZ Punk looks very bright. This is incredibly exciting to hear and see.

So, Hey Ho Lets Go…what’s this new tune all about then?

This is an original catchy song about Karma. What Comes Around has already been described as “a gritty foot stomping punk song”, that it certainly is. It oozes youthful energy; I could hear the charismatic nature of the band even before I watched the accompanying video. Lead vocalist Cory Newman belts out those lyrics like a pro, the whole band have a tight sound.

The four guys from Gizzy have captured an essence beyond their years and driven a firm boot up the backside of anyone who thinks you can’t rock hard sitting down. This inspiring up and coming Kiwi Punk band is led by frontman Cory Newman (16) who uses a wheelchair due to Cerebral Palsy. Guitarist Jackson Clarke (15), bassist Roman Benson (14) and self-taught drummer Rikki Noble (16).

I am very excited to see which direction these guys take. NZ Music has so much talent moving up through the ranks from the young musicians, the punk fraternity is well and truly represented.
