Anecdata Release New Album ‘Vita Brevis, Part 1’
West Auckland bedroom producer Anecdata is back – and this time, he’s sending listeners on a journey through time.
Vita Brevis, the latest release from Anecdata, is a two-part sonic odyssey loosely (and cryptically) centered around Juliet, a young woman hurled into the future after a New Year’s Eve party at Stonehenge goes horribly wrong. Part 1 is out now, with Part 2 following in late September or October.
Crafted entirely by “one nerdy guy holed up in his West Auckland bedroom”, Anecdata’s DIY ethos remains intact: writing, production, mixing, mastering – every detail is handled solo. Whether that’s by choice, he’s not quite sure.
From the industrial grind of ‘Oumuamua – which opens with delicate piano before erupting into Killing Joke-style guitars and brash Gary Numan synths – to the new wave shimmer of Timelapse and Timevault, Part 1 is a genre-hopping ride. The post-rock sprawl of Remember and the cinematic crescendo of Chronofiction close the first chapter with dramatic flair.
Recorded alongside Part 1 in early 2025, Part 2 will continue Juliet’s unexpected journey into the future, as she tries desperately to figure out what happened and how to undo it.
The apocalyptic darkwave of Simulacranium and End of Days gives way to synthpop in News to Me (Yeah, Nah). Tracks like Set in Stonehenge and Existentialert dabble in yes-style synths and arrangements, adding a progressive twist to the narrative.
Together, the two parts of Vita Brevis offer a fragmented, enigmatic tale wrapped in a kaleidoscope of synths, guitars, and genre-bending ambition.
