Awning Sign To Winspear + Share New Single ‘Little Green Book’

Burgeoning Aotearoa outfit Awning today reveal their international label signing details, alongside brand new single Little Green Book.
Awning are a five-piece alternative rock band from Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, led by prominent visual artist Christian Dimick, whose music is shifting, sensitive and cathartic. Since first emerging in 2023, the formation of Christian with drummer Riley Noonan, bassist Damin McCabe and guitarists Ethan Broughtan and Eli Chamberlain have cemented a reputation as a formidable live band, layering narrative and prose side by side with punchy instrumentation – captured on record as it plays out live through their celebrated, self-titled 2025 release.
Awning have trudged to the forefront of their local underground for their immediate and emotive brand of indie rock. “A rambunctious, raucous affair,” said 13th Floor, “drawing on alt-pop sensibility the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Aldous Harding, smattering themselves with quirky diversions.”
Plus dates in Australia with Twine and opening for seminal North Carolina group Wednesday – of which Rolling Stone recalled Awning as being “cut from the same cloth that’s stained with tears, wine, and blood” – the group most recently took on Aotearoa’s prominent Going Global Festival.
Joining the ranks of Swapmeet, Winter, Teethe and more on the Winspear roster, Founder Jared Jones says, “We are beyond thrilled to welcome Awning to the Winspear roster, our first signing from New Zealand, and our second international artist following Swapmeet earlier this year. When I first heard Awning’s music, what struck me was their ability to convey deeply felt emotions so succinctly. Little Green Book is a perfect encapsulation of this. I can’t get that chorus out of my skull.”
As for Awning, the band could not be more excited to have signed to Winspear. They share, “Coming from Aotearoa it feels like a dream to have someone from the US supporting us and they are an incredible team of people. I have loved teethe and Slow Pulp for years so I am at a loss for words to explain how exciting this all feels. It is an honour to jump on their roster.”
Marking the occasion is today’s Little Green Book, a luminescent number that plays back and forth between call-and-response guitar and vocals. Dimick explains, “This song is about grief, gritty stuff that feels almost too much to put into song format. This is why all the lyrical imagery is open, cryptic and layered up. When things feel too personal lyrically, I like to create a little distance between the listener and myself. The lyrical obscurity allows me some privacy but also opens the song’s meaning up, allowing someone to insert their own meaning. I like that about music. In saying that, there are some pretty on-the-nose lyrics as well. “I want to remember what you said” and “Grief is a corner…” I mean, you get the gist. We carry people’s words around for them after they are gone.”
Recorded at Roundhead Studios and produced by De Sevens (Womb, Office Dog, School Fair), Little Green Book highlights the amalgam of references that Awning pulls from. As vast and visceral as Protomartyr to Preoccupations, with a lyrical delivery likened to Isaac Wood. Elevated by the band’s collaborative effort and industrial edge, in some sense Little Green Book could be considered cryptic or non-linear. In others, dabbling in childlike wonder. What’s certain is the power of Little Green Book’s possibility that amplifies Awning’s next step.
