Aotearoa-born, Australian-based rockers Bakers Eddy have dropped their latest EP, I’m Doing Better – a collection of six rollicking tunes, which traverse elements of alt-rock, pop and 2000’s garage, glued together by energetic pop-punk influenced melodies.

With the ‘search for belonging’ at the heart of the project, I’m Doing Better meanders through themes of renewal, acceptance, and looking to the future. But all the while, reflecting on the experiences that have shaped the band – from their hometown of Wellington, to moving to Melbourne.

The EP is a step in a new direction for the four-piece. “I think it feels like a breath of fresh air for anyone who’s been a fan for the last few years. We’re wearing our early emo/pop punk influences on our sleeve more than we’ve ever done and we’re speaking about things that really matter to us,” says the band’s charismatic frontman, Ciarann Babbington (Ngati Porou, Ngati Tuwharetoa).

I’m Doing Better includes new tracks Caroline and How Do I Know alongside the latest single, Hopeless Dreams, as well as previously released tracks Manners Street, UFO and Dust On My Brain.

The songs find Bakers Eddy opening up on their personal experiences of growing up together: “At times we’re being more vulnerable than we’ve ever been before. This year in particular we really opened up to each other… I think that growth within ourselves, and our relationship, found its way into the music,” he adds.

And in keeping with Bakers Eddy’s signature sound, I’m Doing Better remains as high energy as ever. Their new raucous pop-punk-infused single Hopeless Dreams is a case and point.

“It’s that feeling of fear that you might succumb to life when things get difficult and wind up giving up on your dreams when things feel too hard,” says Ciarann.

Bakers Eddy is rounded out by childhood friends Jamie Gordon (drums) and twin brothers Ian (bass) and Alex Spagnolo (guitar).

I’m Doing Better was self-produced alongside Vincent Mcintyre (Fan Girl, Mr Industry, Elizabeth M. Drummond), mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Weezer), and mastered by Emily Lazar (Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Sia).
