‘Borderline’ The new RnB/Pop tune from Rei

Mostly known for his high energy tunes, Rei is getting back to his singer/songwriter roots with his new laid back single Borderline, infusing Rei’s love of acoustic guitar (played by Rei), catchy vocal melodies and hip hop drums.
In Borderline, Rei sings about the fine line between being in love and being in lust with someone.
“Borderline is about that space between a full on relationship and a casual fling. That space where you want to keep seeing someone, but you’re also scared sh*tless of relationships and heart break because of past trauma.”
Borderline also includes co-writing credits from Djeisan Suskov (BENEE, Leisure) one of the core writers for NZ pop sensation Benee. Suskov is also helping co-produce Rei’s new english album due for release early 2021. Borderline follows up the success of Rei’s new Te Reo album Hoea which was just announced as a finalist for 2 Maori music awards.
Rei has kept himself busy in 2020. Not only did he release his first te reo album Hoea, he featured on the #1 lockdown track Stay as well as making various content for Maori TV, live streams for Hallensteins, his own ‘Tutu Tuesdays’ live songwriting sessions and even made 3 music videos. One was a comedy track called Miss My Homies with Mikey Mayz and Tane The Forest Kid. Another was Rapeti, a cheeky track about his super busy summer of touring… And his dance track Holy Hecka has also taken off in the NZ dance community, spawning multiple dance videos on social media. Oh yeah, and his Spotify just clocked over 5 million streams.
Accompanying the release of Borderline is its official music video, directed by Rei and Huia Hamon. The video’s concept, kept simplistic, keeps the focus on Rei’s performance as he indulges the fun, romanticism of the track. There is also a TMS remix video coming!
“I wanted the video to match the personal vibe and simplicity of the song, which is why I kept the set ups simple, and made the video performance based. The petal picking is about me tryna figure out if I’m gonna date this person properly or just let her go.
We all get stuck over thinking things sometimes, and get stuck in these indecisive loops.
The dreamy shots reflected this inner indecisiveness going on in my head.” Rei
