Candice Milner Announces New Single ‘No Victim’
Ōtautahi songwriter Candice Milner returns with 27 and No Victim, the first official singles from her forthcoming third album Rebirth, due for release early 2027.
Recently releasing Milk in the Sun and 27 – Candice is on a roll with her single releases this year. Two indie-rock, catchy tracks to prepare for her third album.
No Victim, the next single out on September 15 is a ballad about mental health, inward struggles while also trying to be an advocate for those around you. The balance between filling your own cup and making sure others’ needs are met is a constant push and pull.
Written during the blur of early motherhood, No Victim explores the strange limbo of adulthood: the tension between wanting to support everyone around you, but also support yourself – is strong. Milner wrote this song thinking about world events, war, death and famine – how true it is that indeed she is so lucky to be alive and well. Two things can be true though, mental health can be a individual issue and the world can be a sad and scarier place than we know.
The two singles are the first releases from Rebirth, an album written amid sleepless nights, shifting priorities and a re-evaluation of identity following the arrival of Milner’s children. Across the record, she wrestles with questions of purpose, creativity, responsibility and joy, documenting the often contradictory experience of wanting to have fun while also trying to be a capable adult.
Recorded with producer Ryan Fisherman and featuring Shane Kovacs, Will McGillivray and Glenn Teasdale, Rebirth sees Milner pushing further into indie-rock territory while retaining the storytelling and emotional depth that have defined her folk inspired songwriting career. The result is her most immediate, energetic and emotionally nuanced work to date.
Milner first gained national attention with her debut album Evergreen, which reached the Top 10 on the New Zealand Music Charts and earned her a finalist nomination for Best Folk Artist at the 2018 Aotearoa Music Awards. Her critically acclaimed sophomore album Depressional Season was praised for its lyrical insight and sonic versatility, receiving national radio support and recognition from RNZ, NZ Musician and Stuff NZ.
Following a period balancing music, motherhood and her work as a midwife, Milner has returned with renewed creative focus. Rebirth captures that transformation – an album about change, uncertainty and finding yourself again.
