Arama Marangai and Te Waimātao Ropata are The OEK, the unorthodox independent rap duo emerging from the private Māori community of Hongoeka Bay in Porirua, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Known for their gritty aesthetic and homegrown, self-produced music, rapper and producer Arama Marangai blends traditional Māori taonga pūoro with elements of boom-bap hip hop and dub reggae, creating a sound that is grounded in culture yet distinctly original.

The OEK, a name short for “Hongoeka”, represents their Ngāti Toa Rangatira community, weaving their land, marae, history, and lived experiences into their lyrics and storytelling. Through their music and social media presence, the duo showcase everyday “Pā life”, documenting their involvement in the community and the environment that shaped them.

Released on 7 May 2026, their debut single Come Over This Side serves as a strong introduction to the duo’s world. Referencing locations from Te Hiko Street in Takapūwāhia to Hongoeka Bay and across to Te Mana Island and Kapiti Island, the track proudly celebrates their traditional rohe while calling their people together. The release set the tone for an ambitious run of music throughout 2026.

Their second release, Tawhito Whenua, takes a harder-edged hip hop approach, exploring the enduring relationship between Ngāti Toa Rangatira and the whenua throughout the Wellington region. Through references to taonga, mana whenua, and the impact of colonial presence, the track reflects on identity, belonging, and the ongoing connection between people and place. Driven by raw lyricism and self-produced beats, Tawhito Whenua honours the legacy of their tūpuna while asserting the importance of whenua and cultural identity in contemporary Aotearoa.

Raw, relatable, and unapologetically homegrown, The OEK continue to represent their people and place through music that is deeply rooted in community. With a growing catalogue of releases planned throughout 2026, the duo are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most authentic emerging voices in Aotearoa hip hop.
