Karl Sölve Steven releases ‘All of Human Emotion on Microfiche (The Remixes)’

Karl Sölve Steven is a composer and producer, currently based in Pārāwai (Thames).

Steven’s output is a collage of organic and electronic sources, synthesised down into an ambitious and enigmatic sound. While working mainly with music to picture, Steven has also been a part of groups Queen Neptune, The Drab Doo Riffs, Heart Attack Alley and Supergroove.

Today Steven shares All Of Human Emotion On Microfiche (The Remixes), an album of remixes by key personalities from Aotearoa’s experimental electronic scenes.

With All Of Human Emotions On Microfiche (The Remixes) now available on all streaming services Steven shares the final four reinterpretations of his original tracks. Joining the Enya inspired pulses of Stef Animal, the analog dreams of Dream Chambers and maximalist howls of Proteins Of Magic, is the dungeon synth duo Gayblade (the collaborative project of Amamelia and Baby Zionov), Tāmaki’s sewer dwelling trio Grecco Romank, ambient composer Sonya Waters and The Big Fresh Collective’s Liam K Swiggs.

Steven admits that “as a whole I was excited and apprehensive about the idea of the remix project, I’m a big fan of all the artists but I was also both scared and embarrassed to give them my musical children to raise.”

“The Gayblade remix of Utterance and Inscription is somehow at once beautiful and hilarious! It’s great to hear how ideas and motifs of The Message are refracted back through the wonderful plurality of heavy industry and Grecco Romank’s human voices. If Freedom Bells was to become a hit in another dimension, it’s Sonya Water’s version that would be playing on the jukebox on the other side of the portal. Liam K. Swiggs has taken my favourite bit of Acoma Phase II, the phasing loop, and cycled it round and round into a club-adjacent banger.”

Reflecting on the collection Steven says “getting everything back was frankly amazing and super humbling. Everyone’s been so incredibly generous, turning these pieces into something vast and imaginative and inspiring. It makes me feel so lucky to share a musical universe with these people; my heartfelt thanks go to them all.”

To celebrate the release of All Of Human Emotion On Microfiche (The Remixes), Sunreturn has collected collected Liam K. Swiggs, Sonya Waters, Stef Animal, Grecco Romank, Gayblade (the collaborative project of Amamelia and Baby Zionov), Dream Chambers and Karl himself to perform for one night only. This kind of local line up is a rare feat, and not to be missed.
