Lung Capture DIY Spirit in New Video for ‘Isolated Gun’
A raw new video for Lung’s Isolated Gun captures the urgency and intensity of one of New Zealand’s defining underground noise rock bands.
Filmed, directed and edited by Alan Beere of TrustFundKid111, the video was shot in less than half-an-hour in the hallway of frontman Dave White’s Wellington home. Principal photography was already over by 9am, with finished edits delivered later the same day, reflecting the same DIY ethos that shaped the recording of latest album Fog (Yellow Bike Records, 2026). Recorded over just two days at The Surgery in Newtown, Wellington with engineer Lee Prebble, the album embraces the immediacy, energy and spontaneity that have long been hallmarks of Lung’s approach.
“We like to work fast and furious and give it everything in one quick blast,” says White. “That’s how we recorded Fog, and Alan immediately understood that approach. What you see is us – a genuine snapshot of our live performance and a taste of what audiences and promoters can expect.”
Opening Fog with the grit and swagger of James Woods’s grinding bass and drummer Zak White’s hypnotic, groove-driven pulse, Isolated Gun repeatedly gives way to Dave White’s blistering eruptions of sonic squall. Establishing itself as one of the album’s signature moments, critics have praised its low-slung groove, devastating walls of guitar noise and sheer visceral impact, setting the tone for the uncompromising record that follows.
The track also reconnects Lung with their own past. White revisited the lyrics from She’s Got a Gun, originally released on the band’s 1991 debut Cactii, and combined them with the rhythmic foundation of Isolation from 2024’s Cancer, creating an entirely new composition that bridges more than three decades of the band’s evolution.
“We always liked the lyrics to She’s Got a Gun,” says Dave. “Marrying them to the drumbeat from Isolation gave us Isolated Gun – a classic love/hate song with a little extra sonic edge that’s great fun to play live.”
Emerging from Palmerston North’s underground in the late 1980’s, Lung became a pivotal voice in a distinctly New Zealand lineage of no wave, post-punk and noise rock, standing apart from the country’s better-known indie jangle-pop legacy. Building on the uncompromising work of immediate predecessors such as The Skeptics, Gordons and early Bailterspace, the band developed a singular approach that continues to resonate decades later.
As Fog’s opening statement, Isolated Gun revisits Lung’s earliest work while ushering in an album that channels the same drive, ferocity and instinctive DIY spirit that have defined the band for more than three decades.
