Spirit Boy Finds The Light with New Single ‘Sunshine’
Following the release of their debut album, The Existential Hours, in June 2025, Christchurch outfit Spirit Boy return with their new single, Sunshine.
A song about finding light and love in life’s darkest moments, Sunshine builds on the emotional honesty of The Existential Hours while embracing a more expansive sound inspired by 1980’s alternative music.
“Sunshine is about finding those moments of light when life feels overwhelming,” says frontman Ethan Mead. “It’s about the people you love, the things that keep you going, and remembering there’s always something worth holding onto.”
While The Existential Hours explored identity, resilience and emotional growth, Sunshine marks a confident evolution in both songwriting and sound. Recorded in Lyttelton, the single was tracked, produced and mixed by Ryan Fisherman, and mastered by Steven Marr – both formerly of Doprah.
“Lyttelton has always been a special place for the band,” says Mead. “There’s a real creative energy there, and I think you can hear a little of that in the recording.”
The harbour township also provided the backdrop for Spirit Boy’s debut single, Adolescence. Filmed at Magazine Bay in a striking one-shot take, the video – directed by Caleb Macdonald of Kita Films – attracted national media attention and won the Wild Card category at the 2024 Reels Music Video Awards.
Sunshine, the first of three new singles arriving throughout 2026, is streaming now on all major digital platforms.
