Molly Devine Releases ‘Common Denominator’
New Zealand artist Molly Devine is back with the next in her series of funk-pop-disco-soul releases, and this is her favourite.
Common Denominator is “really funky” and “really empowering”, combining Devine’s soulful vocal mastery with sleek production by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers), it’s also given extra spark from an epic bass solo from Marika Hodgson and a standout chorus riff by Tom Healy.
Anchored by the line “I don’t think about you anymore,” the track marks the time after leaving a tricky relationship where “you need the music, and you need the dancing to lift you up”.
To Molly, Common Denominator means “I’m the one who’s always around.”
“Sometimes when you’re trying to get out of a relationship, you’re thinking ‘oh no, I’m never going to feel this way again’, but then afterwards you realize – oh, maybe I was a big part of how I felt when I was in that relationship” Maybe I’m the Common Denominator.
