There’s a point in getting close to someone where you realise you’re starting to trust them, even when part of you is still trying to protect yourself. For Renée, that feeling is at the heart of Comfortable – a song about the walls we build, the people who make us want to let them down, and the uncertainty that comes with needing someone.

Blending soulful R&B with rhythmic, dance-driven production, Comfortable captures the push and pull between wanting to surrender to a connection and instinctively holding yourself back. It’s a track that feels intimate and emotionally honest, while still leaving room to move.

The song’s central lyric, “I feel you breaking down my walls, tryna trust you as they fall,” reflects that feeling of slowly losing control. What begins as an attempt to keep someone at a distance becomes something harder to deny, as Renée explores the moment where protecting yourself starts to feel just as difficult as letting someone in.

That tension continues through the track’s second verse:

“I’d just be pretending, if I said that I didn’t need ya / Feel my mind unravelling, fraying apart at the end.”

It’s a reflection of the contradictions that come with falling for someone – wanting to be close, while still figuring out how to be comfortable with the vulnerability that comes with it.

Produced and co-written with Spencer Coyle, Comfortable brings together the warmth of contemporary R&B and the movement of dance-pop. Renée’s glossy, breathy vocals sit naturally within the production, shifting between intimate verses and a more open, groove-driven sound as the song unfolds.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, Renée says:

“Comfortable is about going through the motions of letting your guard down for someone. There’s this point where you realise you’re starting to trust them, even though part of you is still trying to protect yourself. It’s that uncomfortable space between wanting to let someone in and being scared of what it means when you do.”

Comfortable follows Renée’s debut EP, Disclosure, and continues her exploration of contemporary R&B, neo-soul and dance-pop. Drawing inspiration from artists including Jorja Smith, Olivia Dean and Kaytranada, Renée’s music brings together soulful songwriting, rhythmic production and a sound that moves between intimacy and energy.

With previous releases receiving support across New Zealand’s independent music scene, Renée continues to build her presence as an emerging artist from Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland.
