Sam Heselwood’s We Own This City is a song written about living in London and feeling completely disconnected. It’s about the pressure to pretend you’re loving it there – chasing status, image, success – when deep down it’s exhausting and lonely. It felt like everyone was using copious amounts of cocaine as a way to escape the grey, to mute the chaos and push all the pain to the side, even just for a night.
The song captures that blur between wanting more from life and
doing whatever it takes to feel something. It’s raw, it’s dark, but there’s also this defiant energy in it – like even in the mess, for one night, we can still feel alive. We can still own the city.
