Power-trio Spinning Lights unveil their debut album Whack Theories today, 2 July. The title was chosen to represent a common thread across many of the songs therein: the strange human tendency to convince ourselves of either self-serving perspectives or the outright bizarre.

Of the seven previously unreleased songs, inspiration comes from fairly dark ideas, from the societal split over Covid-19 conspiracies (Insulated) to domestic abuse (Spinning Lights) and self-destructive decision making (Imaginary Numbers).

“Gritty, haunted anthems born from our collective post-pandemic hysteria.”

Those notions could be seen as bleak, but the lyrical references are fairly oblique and the music is mostly upbeat, ameliorating any sense of despair. And while some of the tracks stray into the slacker-rock space (Nasty Red X’s), the bulk stays true to the energetic live performances that the Poneke grunge / post-punk group is known for.

Members Piers Chamberlain (guitars/vocals), Kirsty Keys (bass/keyboards/backing vocals), and Harry Hines (drums) are all looking forward to some further out-of-town excursions to bring the work to a wider audience.
