TrinityRoots share new video with traditional Maori puppetry – Karetao
Fresh from their NZ tour TrinityRoots are now packing their bags for their five date double coast charge on Australia. Before they go – they want to share their brand new video for the latest single off the Citizen album, This Road, with their fans.
The video was made and directed by Wellington creatives RDYSTDY (Hollie Smith, French for Rabbits, Dictaphone Blues, Ghostwave) and The Bow (Flying Lotus) and was developed from TrinityRoots frontman, Warren Maxwell’s chance meeting with a maker of Karetao (traditional Māori puppets).
Warren explains the inspiration; “I had a chance meeting with James Webster (Traditional Māori puppeteer) and saw his Karetao puppets and loved how expressive they were when he brought them to life. We started talking about how insecurities and communication (especially amongst males) seem to be at the core of a lot of social issues. I really liked the idea of Karetao ( puppets) portraying a more abstract mysticism and hopefully reflecting the complexities of our psyche. We can be incredibly strong like pounamu but we can also be as fragile as porcelain.”
This Road is the third music video from the latest album Citizen, following on from footstomper, Haiku and the swooning whirls of El Kaptain.
