STH WND’s latest EP, Delta, is a mesmerising new chapter in the journey of this multi-instrumentalist and producer from Tāmaki Makaurau. Active under this moniker since 2019, STH WND invites listeners into a sonic exploration where moods weave, intrigue builds, and fascination lingers across four immersive tracks.

Vertigo opens the EP with an evocative blend of shadowy guitar instrumentals and introspective layers, accompanied by precise and slowed drumming. Subtle, haunting background effects whisper to the listener, while delicate keys enrich the track’s arrangement, giving it a lot of depth. This track is perfect for those moody, contemplative moments in life.

If Delta were a kingdom, I reckon Leech would rule as its dark, sludgy anthem. It’s my favourite track on the album. This track dives deep into a swampy prog-metal underworld, with grungy undertones and a rhythmic drumbeat that grips you like quicksand. Think eerie yet captivating, like wandering into a dim-lit marsh at dawn… alone! The unconventional breakdown near the track’s end is a thrilling little surprise, peppered with effects that echo with spacey surrealness. It’s a perfect track for an early morning trek to the train, or a solo night ride around town.

Lonely is a paradox of its own. It blends sludge-like heaviness with celestial elements, creating a soundscape that feels like winter solace meets an interdimensional discovery. It’s the auditory equivalent of sipping green tea at 8pm in your garage, tackling a DIY project that’s been looming over you all week. Somehow, this track captures the feeling of grounding yourself in the mundane while reaching for the vast unknown… two worlds that might meet in an unexpectedly symbiotic way.

Closing the EP is Quantum Leap, a force of industrial grit and introspection. Without vocals, the track speaks volumes, channeling the frenzied energy of a busy mind hard at work. Fierce distortion and tight drum fills turn this piece into a raw, full-bodied head-banger. Not one for the faint-hearted—or perhaps your mum—but maybe your cat might be on board! It’s a testament to the artist’s ability to create something personal, reflective and ambiguous.

Altogether, Delta is a richly layered and emotionally diverse EP. Its sound feels equally fitting for Auckland’s venues Wine Cellar or Whammy Bar, but also fit for a solitary, chilly night in your bedroom. STH WND has sculpted a musical landscape where every mood finds its place—a compelling expression of passion and a solo vision. A must-listen, no matter where you find yourself!

About the author Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

If I tried to explain all the reasons I do music, we’d be here all day. Basically, I’m here to support an industry that needs it and show people it’s still very much alive. I’ve been going to live events for as long as I can remember. I love the people in this world, the stories I hear, and helping artists get the recognition they deserve. I’ve been with Muzic NZ for over six years now, writing and figuring out how to make music make sense to more people. I also dabble in music myself for fun, and writing about it has been the best way I can stay connected to it.
