Following February’s standout performance supporting Elton John, emerging singer-songwriter Danica Bryant releases her new single, Birthday Girl, today. The track is the first off her debut EP, to be announced in the coming weeks. Birthday Girl combines Bryant’s emotive lyricism with an intense, rock-infused sound, delivered with the ferocity that defines her recent musical endeavours.
Bryant expresses the anxieties of adulthood and ageing up on the track, which she began writing on her eighteenth birthday. “Eighteen felt so heavy to me,” she explains. “It represented these terrifying things coming up in my life… Moving out, leaving high school, taking real control. I felt so angry at the pressure it put on me, and such a sadness in leaving childhood behind.”
Following a songwriting workshop led by Bic Runga at the Christchurch Arts Centre later that year, the track was dramatically reshaped, from folk song to furious pop-rock ballad.
Described by Rosheen Fitzgerald of The Hook NZ as “a young Patti Smith… all hard guitar and pain-filled howl”, it’s clear Bryant’s new music will be a defining step in her career. Her upcoming work, produced by Toby Lloyd of Tiny Triumph Recordings, and mastered by Munki Studios, will make her journey a truly unforgettable one to follow.
