Wellington-based soul and R&B powerhouse, La Coco, shines bright on her new single, Linger – a quiet storm of yearning and longing.

Linger is a haunting and sensual ballad, which blends nostalgic soul with dreamy R&B. It flows with a cinematic, late-night feel, “like a slow-burning memory you can’t quite let go of,” explains Coco.

The song’s instrumentation is spacious and ambient, with warm synth pads and soft rhythmic elements that leave room for emotion to breathe. Vocally, it’s delicate yet expressive, with Coco’s raw vulnerability evoking classic 90s slow jams, but with a modern twist. Think Sade, H.E.R. or Snoh Aalegra.

Linger started in my living room, right after a short conversation with someone I had strong feelings for,” says Coco. “Nothing dramatic was said but so much was left unspoken. That silence sat heavy with me. I needed to write, just to get it all out of my system. It became this emotional release, a way to honour what I felt and saw in that connection.”

Once in the studio, the Samoan and Māori singer and songwriter did not hold back. “I let myself go all the way in. I almost cried during one of the takes because I wasn’t just singing, I was reliving it. I think that’s why the track feels so raw. There’s no pretending in it. It’s honest, start to finish.”

Powerfully capturing the weight of silence and unexpressed feelings, Linger showcases Coco’s authenticity and emotional depth as an artist and gives fans a tiny taste of a larger project she’s set to reveal in the coming months.

The song is accompanied by a stunning music video, made by cinematographer TrisMalu and co-directed with Josie Bonnington Mailisi. The video features dancing by Chas Mamea and Ben Saveasoi.

“I was honoured to work with my friend Tris Malu, an amazing Auckland videographer. I gave my heart to the song and trusted Tris to capture it his way – no overthinking, just trust. Proud of what we created and grateful to everyone who shared their gifts,” says Coco.
