AOSI Release Refreshing New Singles ‘Endless Oceans Part 1’ and ‘Part 2’
AOSI are back for their first new singles in over a year. Endless Oceans Part One and Part Two are a deep exploration into the feelings of isolation, relationship turmoil, and the pressures of living in the modern social world, where even when we are at our most connected, how easy it can feel to be isolated from friends, family, loved ones and the rest of the world.
Whilst all band members now live and are based in Poneke, Wellington, each member grew up in different parts of Aotearoa, all with a close connection to the ocean and the water that surrounds us. It seemed an easy subject for all band members to relate to and explore sonically. The ocean, something that connected us all and acted as an almost protective barrier for New Zealand over the past years, has become one of our biggest downsides. Keeping us isolated from the progress the rest of the world has been making in recent years. The ocean became a fitting metaphor for disconnection, escape, and the internal push and pull that inspired these songs.
Endless Oceans Part One, explores the subject of trying to find something more from the mundane day-to-day of living in small home towns, where judgment for trying to seek something new has reached breaking point. Trying to escape and on the run to something new. We all grew up near the ocean, and would often find ourselves looking out to the endless horizon. This song is about finding discomfort in being comfortable , tired of being stuck in a mundane routine in a dead end town. Taking that leap, diving into the abyss. It’s also a criticism of people we grew up around being okay with never changing, never evolving. We all wrote and recorded this bonding over our need to experience more.
Endless Oceans Part Two, explores the aftermath of Part One. The feeling of isolation leaving your loved ones behind, the people and places you knew behind. Relationships break down and the feeling of the currents of life pulling you in a different direction to people you once were close to. Trying to justify to yourself reasons not to move, evolve, and change. The second guessing that comes with big life decisions. How that feeling when already isolated can make it feel like you’re drowning.
AOSI last released single Mended Mutuality in July of 2024 following up their Debut EP Prima Materia. Muzic.NZ said Prima Materia was “the most thought provoking, interesting and creative effort I’ve seen come out of the NZ music scene this far.”
