Emily Alice have had a productive 12-months. With a move to a new city, and saying goodbye to their long-standing drummer, it is a wonder they have managed to fit releasing music in at all. In their latest track, Find Out, Emily Alice have decided to go down a fresh path. Inspired by the age old adage that good things come in twos, Find Out is a two part track: an interlude leading into the groovy, bass driven star-of-the-show track.

Find Out is loosely based around the idea of trying to fit into a mould that someone has put on you, or rather, realising that you don’t need to fit into that mould anymore. We say loosely because while that is the essence of the lyrics, we really do just love the arrangement and wanted to get this out there.”

Find Out is Emily Alice at their best. As always, the arrangement is anchored by a solid bassline from Jakira Brophy, which is perfectly complimented from the rest of the band. Having played together for so long, everyone in the band gets their time to shine, and knows exactly how to give each other enough space. There is nothing in the arrangement that feels too complicated or too busy. It is topped off with Emily Kerr-Bell’s silky smooth vocal delivery which will make you melt.

The band slowly builds energy throughout the track, which explodes into breaking point in the final section. This last section was recorded without a metronome, and you can feel the band playing off each other in this rise in energy. Both the interlude and the main track are fully realised and bursting with everything Emily Alice are known for.

In this release, Emily Alice say goodbye to long-time drummer and friend, Angus Cleland. Nothing ominous happened – he just moved to Melbourne. Colloquially known as The Human Panadol for his relaxing demeanour, it is heart-breaking to see him leave, but Emily Alice will cherish all of their gigs with him as they take a step into a new direction. Ahead of the release, a video of the track was featured by Rolling Stone AU/NZ as part of their Dunedin Scene Series.

Find Out was recorded and mixed by Sam Healy at Turbine Sound, and mastered by Ben Horton at Organik Muzik Workz. Cover art by Jakira Brophy and press shot provided by Max Balloch.
