Sophie Songbird makes her solo debut this spring, stepping into the spotlight with a voice and vision all her own. Known for her work with beloved Aotearoa band Dr. Reknaw, Sophie now unfolds a new chapter – one that blends vintage soul with
radiant originality.
Her first single, Topless Picking Flowers, arrives today, September 19: a dreamy fusion of classic country charm and smooth Hawaiian tones. Inspired by euphoric afternoons spent gardening topless under the South Taranaki sun, the track and video offer a playful, tender ode to nature, joy, and freedom.
Entirely self-recorded and produced, and mixed and mastered by the ever-talented Serebii, this debut lays the groundwork for Sophie’s unique sound – equal parts nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Drawing from jazz, blues, country, and a splash of psychedelic flair, her songs carry warmth, wit, and a sprinkling of mischief.
On stage, Sophie is magnetic – her honey-toned vocals and rhythmic guitar work creating a rich, intimate atmosphere. This release marks the beginning of a spring tour, where audiences will be treated to a bouquet of unreleased originals that echo
with timeless beauty.
