Theia and Jolie Holland join forces on powerful ode to sisterhood, ‘My Sister’s Hands In Mine’

Theia has taken fans one step closer to the release of her debut album Girl, In A Savage World (out on November 7) with today’s release of My Sister’s Hands In Mine – a haunting collaboration with the critically acclaimed US singer and songwriter, Jolie Holland.

Theia describes the raw and stripped back My Sister’s Hands In Mine as an ode to the power of sisterhood and says she is honoured that her dear friend Jolie Holland agreed to join her on the song.

“I had the idea and melody for the song floating around in my head and Jolie was the first person who came to mind when I started to think of someone I’d want to collaborate with. I’m a big fan of Jolie’s music and all that she stands for,” says Theia.

The result is a sombre and strikingly beautiful ballad, which blends two of the most unique artists on the alternative scene.

My Sister’s Hands In Mine follows the recent release of Patupaiarehe, which debuted at #1 on bFM’s weekly Top 10. Watch the visualiser for Patupaiarehe HERE.

The two songs sit alongside Pray 4 Me, Hoki Whenua Mai (Return The Land) and AMA Single of the Year finalist BALDH3AD! on Girl, In A Savage World.

Theia’s angelic vocals and haunting harmonies, paired with poetic lyricism are front and centre on Girl, In A Savage World. They sit atop a glorious fusion of ethereal alt-folk and indigenous soul, with art rock influences. Many of the songs on the album, which Theia co-produced with Abraham Kunin, masterfully blend traditional Māori instrumentation and composition with contemporary soundscapes and modern songwriting practices.

The 10-track Girl, In A Savage World sees Theia at her songwriting best, as she turns stories passed down through generations into powerful songs of resistance and heart-breaking ballads. Many of the songs talk of the impacts of colonisation on her iwi; others explore subject matter such as religious trauma, Indigenous feminisms, and reclamation. The songs are challenging, but they’re heartwarming and hopeful at the same time.
