Ny Oh Releases Haunting Demo ‘Aperture Unplugged’
Celebrated singer and songwriter Ny Oh is giving fans a glimpse into the making of her award-winning debut album Wildwood, with the release of Aperture Unplugged – a stripped back demo version of the album’s opening track.
Aotearoa-raised, LA-based Ny-Oh won Te Manu Taki Ahurea o te Tau | Best Folk Artist at this year’s AMAs for her 12-track record Wildwood, which features the original version of Aperture. Watch the official video here.
“I wanted to celebrate and commemorate the AMA by giving my listeners a peep behind the curtain of how songs sound when they first start for me,” Ny Oh says of Aperture, which was written at an APRA Songhubs in Tāmaki Makaurau curated by the Grammy Award-winning Brooke Fraser.
“In the writing room that day there was a lot of excitement. To get to write a song with Brooke Fraser – a childhood icon for myself in songwriting – was a real full circle moment. I knew it was going to be a deep and thorough examination of the heart.”
Ny Oh adds: “There’s something about capturing a song in its most raw form, the emotion of it is more easily translated. It sounds a lot sadder than the produced version of Aperture that you’re used to hearing, but it also has a more hauntingly ethereal vibe to it that draws me in every time I listen.”
One of Aotearoa’s brightest talents, Paige, and renowned NZ producer, Joel Jones, also lent their songwriting prowess to Aperture. “I’m so grateful to the collaborators on this song. We made a special space for this song to come to life.
“Writing Aperture was truly one of the happiest days of my life so far. I can hear how grateful I am to be alive in this recording.”
Wildwood showcases one of the most exciting new talents to emerge from Aotearoa in recent years and sees Ny Oh stepping into her own, after spending years on the road as a touring musician with pop sensation Harry Styles.
She started writing Wildwood while still on Harry Styles’ Love On Tour and recorded the album over six days in Topanga Canyon in LA at Fivestar Studios. Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Angel Olsen, Conor Oberst), all of the songs were recorded live, including vocals, with minimal overdubs.
