Aubrie Mitchell Offers a Candid Glimpse Into Her Mind on Dark and Moody New Single
Rising Māori songwriter, producer and audio engineer, Aubrie Mitchell (Ngāti Raukawa), proves she’s a triple threat, while showcasing a darker and moodier side to her sound on her latest single Where She Goes.
Where She Goes offers a vulnerable and candid glimpse of the artist’s mind. “This song centres around my feelings of how I view myself, particularly never being able to live up to my own expectations. As if I’m always second place to the idealised image I have in my head.
“It also speaks to the unfair standards and expectations placed on women in society and how detrimental it can be to younger generations,” says Aubrie.
The multi-talented artist, who challenged herself to write, produce, mix and master the song, also reveals some of the creative process behind the introspective alt-anthem.
“I chose to have my vocals heavily auto-tuned to play on the idea that the voice you hear is robotic, yet the lyrics are introspective and self questioning, which serves as a juxtaposition to the theme but also a parallel to how I view myself.”
The powerful messages in Where She Goes are amplified in an ominous video directed by the award-winning Oscar Keys. “It is shot with an infrared lens, giving it that gothic, eerie feel to it. The outfits I’m styled in feature some sort of mouth or face covering, which symbolises the cage we put ourselves in.”
Auckland-based Aubrie – who works as a freelance producer and audio engineer – first emerged as an artist in her own right with her debut single Secret back in 2024. This set the scene for the songs Evergreen and Just So Lame. Now 18 months on, Aubrie is revealing a new side to her sound, starting with Where She Goes – with support from NZ on Air.
“As a listener, I always gravitate towards artists who are vulnerable with their craft, so I try to open up about topics that I’m a bit scared to share but know that other people would be able to relate to. This song is the first chapter of a darker and moodier side to my sound.”
Fans can expect more from Aubrie in the coming months.
