Abstract Fish Lungs Release First Single ‘Seagulls’ From Debut Album

Raglan Nu-metalcore band Abstract Fish Lungs are set to drop their highly anticipated, genre-bending new single, Seagulls, on July 3rd, 2026 followed by a live showcase at Hamilton’s Nivara Lounge on July 4th.
Recorded at The Porch Studio in Hamilton with producer Regan McKinnon, Seagulls is the first single from the band’s upcoming 12-track concept album, The Bleak Midwinter, due for release on October 31, 2026.
Blending elements of alternative rock, metalcore and rap, Seagulls features layered vocal harmonies, dynamic instrumentation and a closing guitar-led section. Lyrically, the song comes from a place of real, lived experience, tackling the heavy reality of youth substance abuse.
“Seagulls tells the true and painful story of youthful innocence lost to substance abuse,” says the band. “It captures the tragic shift from vibrant teenage enthusiasm into a self-destructive delusion of lies and isolation. It’s about the utter helplessness of trying to support a close friend while they push you away, leaving you to watch them drift away from the sidelines.”
The release will be supported by a performance at Nivara Lounge as part of the Before the Wrecking Ball III showcase, organised by Matthew Mottram. Abstract Fish Lungs were selected by Matthew and Muzic.NZ during NZ Music Month to open the event.
A music video for Seagulls is scheduled for release later in July on YouTube and Spotify Video.
The single marks the beginning of a series of releases leading up to The Bleak Midwinter, with additional singles planned throughout August, September and October ahead of the album launch.
